Taking a body out of Jersey for a funeral

Permission must be obtained from the Coroner before a body can be removed from Jersey in all cases,  not just where the death is reported to the Coroner.

Application to take a body out of Jersey

The form of application to remove a body from Jersey can be obtained from the Court Services Team. Only when the Coroner has given permission, may the body of the deceased be removed and arrangements to move the body should not be made before permission is given.

The funeral director in Jersey will usually complete this form and liaise with the Coroner on behalf of the next of kin of the deceased.

Before granting permission the Coroner must receive a copy of the Death Certificate issued by the Superintendent Registrar.  The coroner may also ask for additional evidence after the form has been received, such as a copy of the deceased’s passport to confirm the person's identity.

It is important for the funeral director to make all the necessary arrangements for the body to be received into the jurisdiction it is being moved to, including any jurisdictions the body will transit through.
