Obtaining a copy of a Jersey grant of probate and will

To obtain a copy of a Jersey grant of probate and a will of a deceased, you will need to contact the Probate Registry  Probate Registry contact details - Courts.je

Please be aware a copy of a grant and will can only be provided if probate has been issued

Unlike a UK grant, a Jersey Grant does not disclose the net or gross value of an estate

In most cases a will lodged with the Probate Registry refers to movable (personal) estate only.  Wills of immovable (real) estate are lodged with the Public Registry, therefore you will need to contact them directly Public Registry Records - Courts.je

If you require a copy of probate issued prior to 2000, you will need to contact Jersey Archive Jersey Heritage | Archives & Collections Online

We aim to provide a copy within three weeks following your request

What you need to tell us

To obtain a copy, you will need to provide the following information:

  • the full name of the deceased person

  • the maiden name of the deceased person (if applicable)

  • any other names the deceased person may have been known under

  • the full date of death or at least the year of death

Types of copies available and cost

Anyone can apply for a plain copy of a grant and will

An administrator or executor can request a local or sealed and certified copy

  • Plain copy:  £1 per page (plus postage if required)

  • Local copy: £1 per page (plus postage if required)

Local copies are for official use within the Island. This includes producing a copy of a mixed will (which includes disposal of immovable estate) for use within the Public Registry

  • Court Sealed and Certified copy: £30 for the certification plus £1 per page (plus postage if required)

Sealed and certified copies are for official use off-Island and can only be provided if we hold original documents

An additional fee for conducting a search may be chargeable

Other documents relating to an estate

Other documents, for example, oaths and powers of attorney, are not public documents.

To obtain a copy of any other document relating to an estate the Registrar of Probate must either:

  • be authorised in writing by the administrator, executor or his / her attorney to provide a copy to a third party or

  • be ordered by the Royal Court of Jersey to provide a copy
